What Is Res?

The Publication
Res is the University of Pennsylvania's journal of undergraduate research writing. We publish stimulating and thoughtful academic writing for an engaged, but non-specialist, audience. We welcome all submissions that combine research with elegant prose, from any academic field. We also invite visual arts and multimedia submissions for publication on our website.

About Our Name
Combining the Latin root "res" with the verb "circare," our modern word "research" translates literally as "circling a thing." More than simply looking again, research implies circling an object and exploring it from all angles. In a larger sense, the community of researchers forms the circle, engaging the scholar in an intellectual exchange. Our choice of name is meant to suggest that research cannot exist in isolation; to flourish and thrive, scholarship requires a circle of knowledge, viewpoints, and experiences. As a focal point for exchanging ideas about what constitutes research, Res means to be at the center of that circle, creating a space where undergraduate researchers from across the University can be appreciated, can be challenged, can join other writers in a spirited conversation.
