For Students

Submission Guidelines
Eligibility: Res publishes research writing from all academic fields and disciplines. Authors must be currently enrolled undergraduates at the University of Pennsylvania.

Format: All manuscripts should be prepared as follows: pages should be double-spaced, numbered, and printed in 12-point type. Since all manuscripts are reviewed anonymously, the author's name should not appear on the document (title page, first page, or in the text or footnotes). Manuscripts should not exceed 5,000 words (approximately 20 pages). All submissions must be accompanied by a brief (100-250 word) abstract. Students should use the documentation style most appropriate to their academic field. Please include your address, phone number, and email address with your submission.

Notification: All notifications will be made by e-mail to the address on the title page. Manuscripts cannot be returned; no responsibility will be taken for loss. On acceptance, authors will be required to supply a final copy on disk in Microsoft Word format.

Multiple and Simultaneous Submissions: Authors may submit no more than two manuscripts per calendar year. Please do not submit work currently under review at other publications.

Multimedia Submissions for Online Publication: Res welcomes the submission of visual art, music, and movies. All submissions must be saved on 3 CDs and accompanied by a brief (100-250 word) abstract describing the project's original contributions to the creative arts. Images should be saved at the highest possible resolution, in .tif or .png format. Recorded sound must be at least 128 kbps. Movies should be saved in the highest resolution and frame-rate possible in either Quicktime or .avi format. Note that movies and musical compositions should not exceed five minutes of total running time. Compressed files will not be considered. Please direct any technical questions to the Res webmaster at critwrit@writing.upenn.edu.

The Review Process
All materials that meet the submissions guidelines will undergo a multi-stage review process. Student Readers will complete the initial review and issue recommendations to the Editorial Board. The most promising submissions will then be reviewed by Faculty Readers within the appropriate field or discipline, who will recommend publication, rejection, or further revision. All final decisions are the responsibility of the Editorial Board, which reserves the right to edit materials for space, consistency, and content.

Why Submit Your Work to Res?
All submissions to Res undergo a rigorous, multi-stage review process. Publication in Res means that faculty and fellow students recognize your work as being among the best in undergraduate research writing. Your work will receive a larger audience both inside and outside of the University of Pennsylvania, and you will gain the satisfaction of having been published in a highly-selective academic journal.

By submitting your work to Res, you are joining a broader community of scholars at Penn. At the same time, you will be gaining further experience in the process by which research is evaluated within academic and professional settings.
