Critical Writing Teaching Fellowships 2009-2010

The Critical Writing Teaching Fellowship is a highly competitive award designed to support advanced graduate students in their professional development as teachers and writers. Fellows teach one Critical Writing seminar each term drawing upon their particular interests and discipline. Seminars are capped at 16 students.

Qualifications
Open to Penn graduate students in the Arts and Sciences currently enrolled in a doctoral program who have not already been recipients of a Chimicles or Critical Writing Fellowship.

To qualify for the Critical Writing Fellowship, applicants must be graduate students in good standing and nominated or endorsed by their graduate group (endorsement form here). They should be experienced writers who have completed their coursework and passed their preliminary examinations. Fellowships may not be held by students beyond their 6th year. Fellows must be able to attend all training sessions as a condition of accepting the award.

Duties/Requirements
  • Teach one writing seminar each term, Fall 2009 and Spring 2010, in accordance with the mission and policies of the Critical Writing Program.
  • Attend orientations, meetings, and training sessions as required.
  • Be observed by the Director of Critical Writing and other training staff of the Critical Writing program.

    Training Schedule
    Monthly two-hour training sessions commencing in the spring term prior to the onset of teaching. One full week session, May 11 - May 15, and one full week August 31 - September 4, concluding with monthly two-hour training sessions September, October, and November 2008.

    Compensation
    Compensation includes a $19,200 teaching stipend, a $1500 training stipend, tuition reimbursement, and benefits.

    Students must be endorsed by their department's graduate chair. To apply, submit a letter of interest; your current CV; a writing sample (3-5 page excerpt from a recent seminar paper, essay, report or other academic writing); brief course proposal (150 words maximum); and two letters (which can be emails) from referees.
