About Howard Marks

Howard Marks

Howard Marks (W'67) is founder and Chairman of Oaktree Capital Management, LLC, as well as a writer whose memos are eagerly anticipated across the financial world for their wisdom, charm, and crisp clarity. An example of Mr. Marks' most recent work can be found in The Gathering Storm, a collection of essays by leading hedge fund experts, the proceeds of which are being donated to a variety of nonprofit organizations, including our Writing Center.

Of Mr. Marks' writing, Wall Street Journal's Peter Lattman wrote, "Everyone knows about the anticipation leading up to Warren Buffett's annual shareholder letters. But for a certain Wall Street set, there are equally high expectations for the writings of Howard Marks."

Mr. Marks regards writing as central to success in the 21st century. His generous support of the Marks Writing Center makes it possible for Penn students to receive the individual attention and feedback that Mr. Marks credits for his own development as a writer.

Mr. Marks received a BS in Economics with a major in Finance from the Wharton School in 1967, and an MBA in Accounting and Marketing from the Graduate School of Business of the University of Chicago in 1970. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst, a Chartered Investment Counselor, and a member of the Los Angeles Society of Financial Analysts. He also serves on the Investment Committee of the Edmund Safra Foundation.

At Penn, Mr. Marks chaired the Trustees' Investment Board from 2000-2010 and has been an active and longtime member of the Southern California Regional Advisory Board (SCRAB). In 1992, Mr. Marks established the Howard S. Marks Term Scholarship, which provides renewable scholarships to undergraduates across the four schools. In 2009, Mr. Marks endowed the Marks Family Writing Center.

To supporters of the Writing Center, thanks for your generous donations. Your generosity has positively impacted my life and those of the many other students who benefit from the fantastic Writing Center resources. Thanks for making a difference in my college experience!
