1. Read or reread “The Writing Lesson” and study the “Reading Maya Writing” handout.

 

2. Using the provided guide to Maya hieroglyphs, discover as much as you can about the four New Year’s pages. Clues: the day signs at top left on each page are the days when the possum figure announces the change of year. The gods in the lower two rows of pictures change roles at the change of year (try to sort them out). Look for signs for the four directions, and for colors; look for glyphs in the pictures.

 

3. Response paper: include comments on the experience of reading a Maya text and Maya pictures.
