John Tranter is the founding editor and publisher of the free quarterly Internet literary magazine Jacket, at http://www.jacket.zip.com.au
 
He is the leading Australian poet of his generation, and works across a wide range of genres and techniques. For more than thirty years he has been at the forefront of the new poetry, questioning and extending its procedures. He has presented his work at readings in more than forty venues in the USA, England and/or Europe since 1985. He has also published widely in British and US literary magazines including the Paris Review, Kenyon Review, Grand Street, New American Writing, Conjunctions, Boulevard, Parnassus: Poetry in Review, _PMC_ (Post-Modern Culture, on the Internet), Verse, the Times Literary Supplement, TinFish, the London Review of Books, and Poetry Review (UK).
            He was born in Cooma, New South Wales, in 1943. He attended country schools, and took his BA in 1970 after attending university sporadically. He has worked mainly in publishing, teaching and radio production. He has lived in London (1966-67) and Singapore (1971-72), and now lives in Sydney. He is married to the literary agent Lyn Tranter, and has two children.
            John Tranter has been a visiting scholar at various institutions, including Visiting Fellow in the Faculty of Arts at the Australian National University and writer-in-residence at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. He was an invited reader at the 1996 Poetry International in London, and also at the 1997 Cambridge Conference of Contemporary Poetry at Cambridge University in April 1997.

            He has published ten volumes of poetry, including a Selected Poems (Hale & Iremonger, Sydney, 1982). A selection of his poems appears in the Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry (New York, second edition, 1988). His most recent books are The Floor of Heaven (Harper Collins, 1992), a book-length sequence of four verse narratives, At The Florida (UQP, 1993), which won the Melbourne Age Poetry Book of the Year award for 1993, and Gasoline Kisses, a chapbook collection of 32 experimental haibun from Equipage press in Cambridge, England. The haibun is a 17th-century Japanese form which uses both verse and prose.
            He compiled and edited (with Philip Mead) the new Penguin Book of Modern Australian Poetry (1992), published in Britain and the US in 1995 as the Bloodaxe Book of Modern Australian Poetry.
