FOR THE ON TIME LARRY EIGNER

 in the sure
             and
                    certain hope

                                       of

 not that

                    the long view doesn't work

 views are just not
                                  photographic

                                                                       mentality
                                                                       our words

                    kinds of

                    imprinting weft

                                                                      contingent

                                 on time

 and place the mechanical
 where it should be
                                    in an old outhouse

                    we are good

          animals living

                                  always               are                  thirst

 none a copy

                                  weaving a moving picture ghost

                                  views

                   points of          triangulation

 in viscosity Euclidean geometry cannot

                                                   segment without  rendering

           land as sea

           the floor a raft

           not that it matters

                                      coincidence

                                      of some words

                                             parallelism of ideas

                                                                               where am I?

                                                                                         subject the
                                                                                         object

                                    of scrutiny
                                                      unstated

          syntax

          myself

          content

          and not enclosed

                                                                              spills out into

 surrounding fields

          not that

                 adjacent

                                                                             casual

      not that impressive

      we are all

      ready unprinted

                                                                             uncontained

      in unseen temporary forms

      in our memories

      it is all ways

      tomorrow's another today

                                                 Afterword 31 August, 1996:

I remember the shock to everything about me when I  bought ANOTHER TIME IN FRAGMENT.  It cleared out almost everything without destroying I had thought and held to be true about poetry whilst leaving me there in something like my entirety to go on being me - I didn't have to change belief or attitude- and yet I did / entirely - because my poetic was irreversibly changed by the example.

i recovered / unfortunately one does - but over the years i  have gone back not just to that book of course but often to  that book - and it is always still speaking then and now, each now, and in the present - and there is always something to get out of it (usually lots) and always something to learn - eigner is never late
