  THE HOLIDAYS
                    after Frederick Pohl’s JEM

Our economy proceeds
as if life were an unlearning,

the world a glass globe
that would snow if turned over.

Science: Gloom loses.
Fiction: Christmas wins.

And so
in these moments

we stand
to disappear.

We complete the process
of growing up

and begin the process of dying.
Which is much the same thing.
