Joe Balaz - Hawaiins in Hale Pa'ahao

HAWAIIANS IN HALE PA'AHAO (Prison) is a commentary on the large number of ethnic Hawaiians incarcerated in prison. Some analysts attribute this problem to the loss of self-esteem and the poor social standing of Hawaiian people as a whole. The alternating vertical lines and the o's which create the visual image of characters in a jail cell also spell out the word lolo, which means paralyzed or feeble-minded.
