From the book Invading Reagan

What was here before was only a sequence of possibilities, all of them moving
toward -- but not quite reaching -- the point where they might be
discernable. It should be understood that terms like structure and function,
under conditions like these, become interchangeable, depending on the level
of abstraction. Substance on the macroscopic level can be understood as
invariance of function in the microscopic realm.
