An educational anthropologist Brown based the book on her two years as a public high-school teacher in New York City. Locally, Brown is a supporting member of the Caucus of Working Educators (http://www.workingeducators.org/). The Caucus includes some 500 K-through-12 public-school teachers working to effect change within the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT).
