David Stern and Stuart Gibbs, writers for film, TV, books, theater and other media

Know this: Times are changing in the entertainment business. And while it’s getting harder and harder to sell a screenplay (not that it was ever easy), new and exciting avenues for writing are always opening up. Nowadays, there are dozens of cable stations looking for TV shows (and yes, even reality shows are scripted), while video games and internet media are also seeking writers. Together, David and Stuart have written for film, TV, radio, books and theater – but have potential opportunities to work in video games, graphic novels and other media in the near future.

Because these writers' schedules are always in flux they can not predict exactly what they will be working on next summer, but the following are things an intern can expect to work on:

• Help with writing duties including reading drafts and offering ideas and brainstorming with the writers.
• Provide "coverage" (summary and opinion) for scripts. This will give the intern the opportunity to read many current scripts on the market and gain a better understanding of what it takes to sell a project.
• As in any internship, there will be office work and running-of errands. For this reason, it is necessary for the selected intern to have a car in Los Angeles for the summer.The right person for this internship will be eager to do all tasks, and and will look for opportunities to take on more than what is "required" of them.
• With the successful completion of the more mundane activities connected with any job, there will also be some access to meetings that will give the intern a look at how things are done in the movie business. This will give the intern insight into how these writers careers work and a chance to meet some agents and other important people.

Ultimately, this internship will give a budding writer a unique look at how things work on the writing end and an opportunity to receive constructive criticism on their own work to help them get a head start in this business.

Possible projects that the screenwriters will be working on next summer:

• Stuart has the first draft of a new novel due at the end of the summer and most likely will have the edited draft of a second novel due then too.
• David has a TV series set up at ABC. If the fates smile at him, the series will begin production next summer. David is also continuing to produce an animated feature currently in production, and work on several musical projects in various stages of development.
• Development/pre-production of a part live action part-CGI motion picture.
• If a movie or TV show is going next summer (always a long shot; that's the business). The intern might be more involved with the whatever's going on on-set.
• There are possibilities to work on the script of a new video game – as well as an interactive experience designed by Syynlabs (creators of the OK GO Rube Goldberg Machine video).

About the Screenwriters

Stuart Gibbs has written scripts for every studio in Hollywood, including the movies See Spot Run, Repli-Kate, and the upcoming Pool Boys and Parental Guidance. He has also developed television shows for Fox, ABC, the WB, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon (and is currently at work on Shelf Life for ABC). His first novel, Belly Up, was released last May. His second, The Last Musketeer, will be released in September and his next three are scheduled for release in 2012.

David I. Stern began his career working for Director/Lyricist Richard Maltby, Jr. on the Broadway productions of Miss Saigon, Nick & Nora, and Big. Soon after, he wrote the Rodgers and Hammerstein revue Some Enchanted Evening, the plays Dreams & Stuff and Finders of Lost Luggage,the NPR radio program The 1990's Radio Hour and a Half, and the musical Snapshots.

David took a small detour into directing with the New York revival of Starting Here, Starting Now (nominated for a MAC Award) and a stint with The American Project at Circle in the Square. After his extended stay in New York, David migrated west to Los Angeles. There he wrote the television musical Geppetto for The Wonderful World of Disney (nominated for four Emmy Awards), as well as numerous feature films including: The Muppets Return for Jim Henson Productions, Wish for director Ivan Reitman and Dreamworks, Old Friends for Revolution Studios, The Magic Brush for Miramax, The Intern for Disney, and Open Season 2, Open Season 3and The Hotel Transylvania for Sony Pictures Animation. He is currently producing the animated feature Turkeys (due in theaters Thanksgiving 2012).
