RealArts@Penn internship at Museum of the Moving Image

About Museum of the Moving Image

The mission of Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) is to advance the understanding, enjoyment, and appreciation of the art, history, technique, and technology of film, television, and digital media. MoMI presents exhibitions, education programs, significant moving image works, and interpretive programs, and collects and preserves moving-image related artifacts. Education is at the heart of our mission, and for nearly 30 years, we have used moving image media - the most ubiquitous and relatable art form of our time - to stimulate people's imaginations. MoMI occupies a state-of-the art facility in the historic Astoria Studio complex, now the campus of Kaufman Astoria Studios, one of the largest film and television production facilities on the East Coast.

An international leader in the fields of digital media and film, MoMI welcomes more than 250,000 visitors a year. The cross-cultural and intergenerational appeal of its subject matter and the highly interactive, immersive nature of its exhibitions have made MoMI a destination for both local and international visitors.

What We’re Looking For and What You Can Expect

As a curatorial assistant in MoMI's Collections department, the intern will help with research and writing related to the Museum's material culture collection. MoMI's holdings include various kinds of technical apparatus; production and costume design material; costumes; scripts; licensed merchandise; photographs; and more. In addition to working on specific projects, the intern will provide general departmental support, and will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience in collections management. They will attend staff-wide meetings, gaining insight into the day-to-day activities of a major cultural institution.

Interns should have a general interest in moving image history, strong writing skills, and be detail oriented.

The intern will receive a museum identification card that allows for free admission to New York City museums during the internship period.

Schedule

The intern's schedule will be determined in consultation with MoMI's staff.
