RealArts@Penn internship with Philadelphia Media Network

Opinion Intern

If you are passionate about current events and expressing your thoughts about them, this is the internship for you.

In this 10-week internship, you will be treated like a member of the combined Opinion department for the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Daily News, and Philly.com.

Our team includes editorial writers, columnists, editors, a cartoonist and we’re responsible for content on the daily editorial and op-ed pages, the Sunday Currents section, and the Opinion pages on Philly.com. The intern will participate in our ongoing conversations and debates about which topics to write about and what position the board should take on an issue. Interns are also free to pitch bylined op-ed pieces (and many previous interns have been published on our pages).

Regular duties will include research on current events, assisting with print and web production, social media promotion of Opinion department work, and occasional person-on-the-street interviews.

The intern will also sit in on interviews with a wide range of guests who come to make pitches to the board on issues of importance. (Those guests might include area senators, governors, state representatives, the mayor, City Council members, as well as the heads of local companies, universities, and nonprofits.) Notable guests in recent years have included President Obama, Hillary Clinton, Gen. David Petraeus, former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, and Bono. You will also have opportunities to spend time shadowing other Inquirer writers, reporters, and editors to observe what they do.
