RealArts@Penn internship with Whitechapel

Since its founding in 1901, the Whitechapel Gallery has premiered world-class artists from modern masters such as Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Frida Kahlo to contemporaries including Sophie Calle, Lucien Freud, Gilbert & George and Mark Wallinger. Whitechapel Gallery exhibitions are diverse in scale and scope, approaching modern and contemporary art from a range of perspectives from historic exhibitions drawing on archives to brand new-commissions. The Gallery also programs a wide range of education, outreach and public program activities, many of which engage the diverse local community.

What to Expect

As an intern in the busy Development Department, you will learn about the various strands of support that enable Whitechapel Gallery to operate as a registered charity, including individual donors, corporate support, and trusts and foundations. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a range of exciting events across the Gallery, from our late-night arts festival, Nocturnal Creatures, to activities around current exhibitions including Michael Rakowitz, Queer Spaces: London, 1980s-Today, and our Max Mara Art Prize for Women. As a mid-size gallery with large ambitions, this role is a wonderful opportunity to gain insights into the inner workings of a public museum, working with colleagues in the Exhibitions, Education and Public Programmes teams as well as the Development Team. You will also gain valuable transferrable fundraising skills and knowledge which are an asset to any future role in an arts organization.
