Elliott Witney, who has a Penn student was one of the founding members of
the Writers House in 1995-96, has stayed in touch with the Writers House
during the years since he left Penn. He has taught at the KIPP ("Knowledge
Is Power") Academy, a successful experiment in urban middle-school
education. He is now the Principal of KIPP Academy in Houston.
Each year for the past three years, students from KIPP have visited Penn--and the Writers House--where Al Filreis, Professor of English and Faculty Director of the Writers House has taught them modern poetry.
