The Kelly Writers House offers many learning opportunities, including internships; some internships pay, but most are not work-study jobs and are unpaid (volunteer). They are available to undergraduate students (and, in one instance, to recent graduates) at Penn only. Kelly Writers House internships are designed to give students a chance to get deeply involved in a particular program or project. More information about each opportunity is below. Mali Heled Kinberg (C'95) has created this endowed fund at the Kelly Writers House that, each summer, will enable a student to travel for the purpose of conducting the research that will lead to a significant writing project. The winner of the Heled Travel Grant will receive $2,000 toward the costs of travel for research. The travel and research will be conducted during the summer (between mid-May and the end of August). Candidates who propose a trip of longer rather than shorter duration will be given priority, and candidates who propose to travel beyond North America will also get priority, but any travel plan--to any place, of any length--will receive serious consideration based on the quality of the project. The Joan Harrison Award is an annual award/"writing scholarship" of $1500 for a current undergraduate who is affiliated with the Kelly Writers House. The scholarship is intended to encourage and support a student with financial need who is working on a writing project or projects. To apply, contact Jessica Lowenthal, the Director of the Writers House (jalowent@writing.upenn.edu), with a brief description of your writing project, an informal demonstration of your financial need, and a summary of your affiliation with the House. The current deadline for applications is October 17, 2007.
Available for one or two undergraduates interested in organizing and producing a monthly, one-hour spoken word radio show taped live and broadcast on WXPN 88.5 FM. LIVE at the Writers House interns work closely with the Program Coordinator and Director, assisting with the production of the show. This includes: coming up with the roster of performers, contacting and corresponding with them, working on the script for the show, organizing and assisting on the night of the show (including working with WXPN staff on sound and equipment setup), and helping with the uploading of the show to the Kelly Writers House web-based archive. LIVE at the Writers House internships carry a small stipend, to be determined based on the budget year and the number of interns each year.
The purpose of the Writers House Junior Fellows program is to encourage excellent Penn students to stay in the Philadelphia area as they develop their creative talents in the months or year immediately following graduation. The recipient of the Writers House Junior Fellows Award helps to create new programs at the House, and is given study space, resources, and a small stipend to write and create new art. The College of Arts & Sciences and CURF fund a total of twenty-two summer research internships as part of a summer institute for University of Pennsylvania students in the humanities and social sciences. Two of these summer internships will be available at the Kelly Writers House. These full-time (30 hrs/week) internships are for a period of up to ten weeks and include a stipend of between $3,000 and $3,500, depending on the organization and length of the internship. Works with the Director and Faculty Director in organizing the alumni visitors to the Kelly Writers House for the year; researches possible visitors, contacts alumni, helps schedule and set up readings and events. A great opportunity to gain event planning experience and to get to know Penn alumni writers.
Works with the Director, Faculty Director, and Program Coordinator (and sometimes the staff of PennSound) cataloguing and organizing the Writers House audio archives. This internship can include technical/computer work, such as converting digital audio tapes into MP3 files.
This internship involves working primarily with the Director and Assistant Director of Development on administrative tasks associated with fundraising, including database upkeep and maintenance, publicity archive maintenance, development research, filing, and helping to write up development materials. An excellent opportunity to learn more about nonprofit arts fundraising!

The "Kerry Prize" is an annual award honoring the extraordinary achievement of Kerry Sherin Wright, Director of the Kelly Writers House from 1997-2003. The prize is awarded each spring by a representative committee of Writers House-affiliated writers, chaired by the Faculty Director, to a member of the Writers House Planning Committee or "hub" for a proposal for an event or project that best captures the aesthetic capaciousness and literary communitarianism that is a founding idea of the Writers House and the hallmark of Kerry's work as its Director. The amount of the prize is $1000, to defray the costs of putting on the proposed project or event, which will happen during the following fall semester.
