Center Square

CENTER SQUARE: PAST

Stone fortress but for
its flow, just like the city,
strong but welcoming.

The windows offset
by the spiral staircases
lend imperfect charm.

Waterworks destroyed,
ruination enables
rebirth at the heart.

Palatial and yet
democratic, a tower
and square, a city.

Somehow the building
calls itself out, standing for
Philadelphia.

CENTER SQUARE: PRESENT

The playful clothespin
and LOVE statues, benignly
guarded by City Hall.

The square itself is
quiet, but listens to the
protesters and priests.

The buzz of voices
legitimates itself here,
in protest or joy.

Lazarus got the
wrong town; the tired and poor all
huddle on benches.

Come in, be humbled.
Emerge, respect the city.
Move on, and give back.
