One Night Stand
Patricia Green

The evening
splendid light streamed out,
one eye shut by ideas
The evening
his absence had significance
He was very scarce
some small letters,
lost articles,
the face of interest now ready.
On this evening
a strong smell of tobacco;
smoke black, curling, shining
Under the table,
an empty bottle
His eyes red, soft
Influence grew out of sex,
the chase
speechless tonight,
knees fine white calves elbows
a smell of soap
a mouth planting on his hip unsteadily
Nodded willingness to submit,
to please,
Thick unsteady utterance,
a delicious odor
of personal secrets;
secrets found, lost.
If I should hear who
she was, that's no secret.
I can dance by myself,
a soft smile,
swan's legs,
bare feet shot by action
across the night.
