Van Pelt at Van Pelt: BRINGING THE LIBRARY HOME

We are experimenting with a program whereby reference librarians come to Van Pelt College House's computer room in the evening to teach students in the use of various on-line reference databases. Jim O'Donnell comments:

The librarians involved are chiefly Patricia Renfro, in charge of public services, and reference librarian Debra Bucher. They were here in fall and liked results, have been to Stouffer twice, and so we agreed they'd come back. What strikes the librarians is that when you deliver instruction in space where the students feel at home, the students are more comfortable, inquisitive, and receptive -- which is exactly what any good teacher wants her students to be in the first place. So we see this as a first step towards further expansion of the library into a facility that is everywhere and everywhen, and of the residences as places where we acknowledge that learning goes on all the time and try to facilitate it.
