In 2003 and again in 2004, the accomplished writer and director Andy Wolk (C '70) visited the Kelly Writers House to lead a three-day Symposium on Screenwriting and Directing. The Symposium, the first of its kind at Penn, struck a heretofore untapped vein of creativity on campus, evidenced by overflowing audiences and lengthy Q & A sessions.
In April 2002, University of Pennsylvania Class of 1942 Professor and Faculty Director of the Kelly Writers House, Al Filreis, led a two-night, three-day workshop retreat on modern poetry in the spectacular setting of the Catskills. The Kelly Writers House teamed up with Frost Valley, a 6,000-acre conference center in the Catskill Mountain Region of New York State, to offer this exceptional educational getaway.
A number of accomplished alumni -- poets, fiction writers, editors, screenwriters, journalists -- generously lend their wisdom and experience to Penn's current students each semester. These illustrious graduates visit the Kelly Writers House to do readings, run workshops, and lead discussions about everything from children's books to contemporary screenwriting.
