True or False: A Fake News Survival Course
Fulfills the Writing Requirement
Open to juniors & seniors who have not fulfilled their writing requirement.
Do we live in a post-truth world? Is fake news endemic to modern life? Are we so in thrall to the agendas of politicians, news agencies, corporations, ideologues, and foreign actors that we can't trust anything in the media to be unbiased and factually accurate? In this course about navigating and rising above the barrage of questionable info we receive from the media every day, we will be reading True or False: A CIA Analyst's Guide to Spotting Fake News. Former CIA analyst Cindy L. Otis examines fake news through its long history, looks at the state of fake news in our world today, and offers advice that all of us can use to recognize it and defend ourselves against its influence. After reading and analyzing this lively, thought-provoking book, students will develop research projects on topics of their choice and use their findings to write a research-based White Paper and an Op-Ed. Other shorter assignments will include logical reasoning exercises, academic reading and research, professional peer review, and writing for businesses and nonprofits.
