WRIT 031: COGNITIVE SCIENCE (COGS)
Spring 2022 Courses
WRIT 031 301
TR 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM
Jeoung
Children's Language Acquisition
Fulfills the Writing Requirement
None of us remembers when we first began using language; it is a process that begins as soon as an infant is exposed to linguistic input. How young children achieve fluency in a very short span of time is a growing area of research in cognitive science, at the intersection of linguistics, psychology and child development. In this class we will read The Infinite Gift by Charles Yang. We will consider the interplay of both biological determinants and environmental factors, discussing so-called "errors" in pronunciation and syntax, and what insights scientists have gained from experimental and theoretical investigations of language. Students choose related topics for their research and writing.
