The Art of Protest
Fulfills the Writing Requirement
This seminar will use Liz McQuiston's Protest!: A History of Social and Political Graphics to guide our exploration of protest art in a wide range of media. Before focusing upon protest graphics of the 20th and 21st centuries, we will first look at early 16th century broadsheets. We will then explore how graphics have been used to protest tyranny, inequality, and war around the world, including Europe, Mexico, America, South Africa, Tunisia (and other Muslim countries), and Hong Kong. Thereafter, students will begin deep dives into research on these topics, immersing themselves in scholarly inquiries that will draw from McQuiston's text. Right alongside the development of our knowledge about the art and design of protest, we will encounter and experiment with a variety of writing genres, styles of writing, and writing strategies as we work through these important historical and current events.
