LGBTQ and Socioeconomic Class

Fulfills the Writing Requirement

How does socioeconomic class inform and shape other identity categories like sexuality? This seminar will explore and interrogate how class intersects with LGBTQ identity, how academic and cultural discussions of sexuality are often implicitly elitist, and what activist and anti-racist movements might do in response. We will use Matt Brim's text Poor Queer Studies: Confronting Elitism in the University to guide our analysis of the intersections of class and sexuality. We will use this scholarly text to help us understand writing in the discipline of queer theory, focusing on the discipline's shared reasoning structures, evidence, and citation practices. In turn, students will be introduced to a variety of new writing situations and strategies, including a white paper and public argument, to sharpen their skills of analysis, research, and critical writing.
