When Math Goes Wrong in the Real World

Fulfills the Writing Requirement

(Expert math knowledge not needed, anyone who's made a math mistake is more than qualified.) Math runs the world, from our computers to the buildings we live in and the cars we drive. But we all make mistakes and sometimes math in the real world goes wrong: hilariously wrong public signs, stranded battleships, chaos on the internet, from life altering errors to what becomes viral memes. Our course will start with the informative (and funny) book Humble Pi: When Math Goes Wrong in the Real World, by Matt Parker. After learning about math mishaps we will explore research and recommendations for addressing these real world problems in a chosen area. Throughout the course we will develop critical reading and writing skills in collaborative work, discussions, and writing for academic and public audiences.
