Delusions of Invulnerability

Fulfills the Writing Requirement

How did the ancient Greeks and Chinese first conceive of the role of philosophers, and the idea that we should be governed by learned elites? How did the advice of these elites change based on the audiences they faced and the institutions they represented? How have these roles and concepts continued to inform our contemporary society, particularly in its twin concerns for democracy and for the common good? What are we to make of the human desire for invulnerability in the face of an unpredictable world and human frailty? These are the questions we will be exploring in this seminar, organized around the distinguished author, H. R. Lloyd and his book, Delusions of Invulnerability. This writing seminar, exploring academic, private, and public sector writing, will focus on the question of how philosophy can contribute to the public good in times of crisis.
