Revealing Images XV

Not from Jylland-Posten. This image, depicting the Prophet Mohammed "rotto dal mento infin dove si trulla" ("rent from the chin to where one breaketh wind", in Longfellow's classic translation) is not from a contemporary newspaper, Danish or otherwise, but from anonymous illustration to the Finnish translation, by Eino Leino, of the Divina Commedia by Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), originally published, with the help of Government money, as Jumalainen näytelmä by WSOY in 1924 - the copy in my library printed by WSOY in Juva, Finland 2001. Based on their recent statements, I think we can plausibly expect apologies from Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, proposals for new educational measures from the Lutheran Archbishop, Jukka Paarma, and prompt investigative action from the staff of the Central Criminal Police.

To facilitate their work, let me disclose a bit more of the passage that the image is based on (these are lines 22-36 of Inferno in Eino Leino's Finnish):

Ei kiulu, jost' on pohjalaudat poissa,
niin ammota kuin näin mä auki erään
leuasta saakka peräreikään. Suolet

välissä jalkain hältä riippui, auki
ammotti luusto ja se rapasäkki,
