In the years when I was seeing him a lot, he definitely mentioned Stevens as a favorite and an influence. That&#39;s one reason it&#39;s so collectible--there were very few copies printed.  I don&#39;t think Ashbery has ever addressed why this was.  The later Selected came out from Viking in 1985.      &lt;BR/&gt;&lt;BR/&gt;The one quality which Spicer&#39;s verse teaches you is the &quot;IMpersonality&quot; of inspiration.
