From fridge magnets, sea-side rock and voodoo charms, through speaking dioramas and screenprinted posters, to painted canvases of Tuscan arson this show is a sigh of relief from the pretentions of Art. Yeah.

I have a personal interest in Oaxaca. Here’s some news as reported
locally, by the Associated Press and by the Washington Post: plus a little history here and here. Some notes on the Triqui language are here.

Happy Birthday Hubble

Twenty years.

A brand new Hubble photo of a small portion of one of the largest seen star-birth regions in the galaxy, the Carina Nebula. Towers of cool hydrogen laced with dust rise from the wall of the nebula. The image captures the top of a three-light-year-tall pillar of gas and dust that is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars. The pillar is also being pushed apart from within, as infant stars buried inside it fire off jets of gas that can be seen streaming from towering peaks like arrows sailing through the air. Air-space over Europe is already closed.

Nottingham, March 4th. 1928 – London, April 25th. 2010
“Someone lent us a cottage in Hertfordshire. I was sitting in a sort of parlor there one day, writing. And suddenly I saw someone run past the window, along the lane outside. With shorts on, white shirt and so on. And it seemed to me such an unusual image… that I wrote down at the top of a sheet of paper, ‘the loneliness of the long-distance runner.’ I didn’t know where he had come from, I didn’t know where he was going. He was simply a sort of… vision, floating by the window. And I put the line away, I thought I was going to write a poem with this sort of line in it. It seemed rather a nice line.”

Obituary from The Guardian here.

Clark Coolidge’s “The Act of Providence” triggered a brightening of the book front:

Modern Toss VI
resuscitates the snigger, while
+
doesn’t waste words. It’s an ephemeral publication, but Michael Ball in Baltimore mbball59@gmail.com might still have some copies.
And thinking of Modern Toss reminds me that Well Rotted Muck nails it now and then.
