Intimacy and Women...hmmm...

Most people walk into the Kelly Writers House to hear speakers, experience poetry or to attend/perform in the periodical speakeasies. Or to seek out the help of a writing advisor. Here's yet another reason to stop in--to view the works of two emerging female artists at the show that just opened its doors on October 26. In the Arts Cafe are four small collages by Catherine Gontarek. Gontarek's works are intricate and juxtapose different mediums to confuse the senses with irregular shapes and colors. Each work is split up into quadrants, drawing the observer closer to the frames.

Contrasting with Gontarek's collages are Ilaria Arpino's oil-on-canvas paintings, which hang in the living and dining rooms. The living room houses her figure paintings--each figure is done in a distinct style, proving Arpino's wide-ranging skill. She paints with sophisticated brushstrokes and creates images of candid human emotions. The dining room exhibits her more recent and somewhat abstract works--Eclipse and Hiatus.

The exhibit at Writers House at 3805 Locust Walk is a well-worth-it stop on the way home from classes. Stop and appreciate the art of others in our busy college lives; this exhibit is a small yet thoroughly entertaining experience. The show runs until December 7.
