Daniel Aaron's chapter on Dos Passos, footnote 17
17. Dos Passos's "metamorphosis" was noted in *NM*, XXIV (July 6,
1937), p. 13. He spelled out his pessimistic conclusions about Europe
and his new thoughts about America in *Journeys Between Wars*
(N. Y., 1938). Matthew Josephson thought it odd that the man who
described the "dread fate which overtakes innocent bewildered, midde-
class liberals" should now represent an attitude he once condemned.
*NR*, LXXXXIV (April 27, 1938), p. 365.
