Daniel Aaron's chapter on Dos Passos, footnote 7
7. Dos Passos's letters quoted here were an written to his friend Arthur
McComb. Two are undated. The others were written on June 28, 1917,
Aug. 27, 1917, Sept. 12, 1917, July 31, 1917, Aug. 10, 1917, Sept.
12, 1917, Oct. 5, 1918. I am indebted to Mr. Dos Passos for permission
to quote these letters. According to Dos Passos, Hillyer left before their
collaborative novel was finished. Each author was supposed to write
alternate chapters. Finishing the book, Dos Passos wrote, "made me
discharge a shocking bit of ammunition prematurely." Dos Passos to
McComb, Dec. 31, 1917.
