Daniel Aaron's chapter on Dos Passos, footnote 7

7. Dos Passos's letters quoted here were an written to his friend Arthur McComb. Two are undated. The others were written on June 28, 1917, Aug. 27, 1917, Sept. 12, 1917, July 31, 1917, Aug. 10, 1917, Sept. 12, 1917, Oct. 5, 1918. I am indebted to Mr. Dos Passos for permission to quote these letters. According to Dos Passos, Hillyer left before their collaborative novel was finished. Each author was supposed to write alternate chapters. Finishing the book, Dos Passos wrote, "made me discharge a shocking bit of ammunition prematurely." Dos Passos to McComb, Dec. 31, 1917.
