Headnote


Louis Untermeyer, in a once-famous anthology, Poetry: Its Appreciation and Enjoyment (New York: Harcourt, Brace and Co., 1934), offered the following headnote to this poem:

Poetic portraits, especially portraits of the spirit, are revealed more swiftly by suggestion than by direct delineation. The naive wonder and divine irreverence which characterize America's greatest woman poet are suggested in the following poem which depicts Emily Dickinson's entrance into Heaven.
