"Cubism"

Hy Sobiloff

from the book, Dinosaurs and Violins (Farrar, Straus & Young, 1954)
CUBISM

Dinosaurs and violins played in the sky,
Their music disappearing over the city;
Ill-tuned strings screeched bumpy sounds
Of age, anger and broken pitchers.

The music disappeared deep in the city
Whistling empty sounds;
A violin lay against a building,
A cubist painting hiding sound in a basket.
