(b. circa 1962) Petulant, videogenic poet who was chief beneficiary of MTV's fleeting fascination with spoken word culture. Estep's mini-tirades made perfect, pithy inter-program soundbites in the manner of Denis Leary; she featured prominently on the channel's 1993 "Poetry Unplugged" special and its subsequent "Spoken Wurd" tour. With her backing band I Love Everything, Estep released No More Mr. Nice Girl (1994; on the record label of Nuyorican Poets Café, the New York venue where she made her name in "poetry slams"), but record sales were as hard to come by as continued MTV support.
