VIENNA, Nov 21 (AFP)—The director of the World Jewish Congress urged France to return more than 2,000 works of art snatched from Jews during the Nazi era, in an article to be published in the Austrian magazine Format on Monday.
Elan Steinberg said: "For 50 years, French museums have held 2,058 works of art which do not belong to them."
Steinberg said 678 pieces of art, taken from Jews during World War II, were held in the Louvre museum.
An international conference on gold and other goods seized from Jewish victims of the Holocaust will be held next week in Washington.
