To members of "book group 9," discussing poetry by Penn women: As you know, we begin on September 15. You need only have an email address that you can read fairly regularly. No other preparation is necessary. As we begin discussing each new poem, I will send it out by email and I will also point you toward a web version of the poem. And then we will discuss them, poem by poem. It's that simple. If you are not used to reading a lot of email each day, brace yourself. Al Filreis The Class of 1942 Professor of English Faculty Director, the Kelly Writers House University of Pennsylvania << www.english.upenn.edu/~afilreis >> ------------------ To the participants in book group number 9 of the Kelly Writers House Alumni Book Group project: It's time for us to start on a month-long journey across the range of recent poetry written by women poets associated with Penn. In doing so we at the Writers House help to mark the 125th year of women at Penn--a celebration that will culminate in early November here on campus. Before we begin to use this listserv (electronic mailing list) to discuss the first poem, let us introduce ourselves. Our listserv is a single email address whbook9@english.upenn.edu . Anyone who sends a message to that address will be sending it to everyone on this list including himself or herself. Since there a good number of participants in this discussion group, please try to keep your messages brief and to the point. More about listserv etiquette later. In the meantime--yes--write to us and tell us who you are, what is your relationship to Penn, and perhaps why you decided to join this discussion. Tahneer Oksman and Heather Starr, who, with me, will be leading (or, anyway, steering) the discussion, are out there as well, of course--and I'll ask Heather and Tahneer to introduce themselves. After many or most of the introductions are in, I'll begin our discussion of the first poem. I'll send the poem by email and I'll also point you toward a web page consisting of the text of the poem, and I'll pose a question to get us started. --Al Al Filreis The Class of 1942 Professor of English Faculty Director, the Kelly Writers House University of Pennsylvania Carnegie/CASE Pennsylvania Professor of the Year << www.english.upenn.edu/~afilreis >> From: Steve McLaughlin Subject: Intro: Better Late Than Never? To: whbook9@dept.english.upenn.edu Sender: owner-whbook9@dept.english.upenn.edu Precedence: bulk Hello everyone, Sorry for the prolonged delay in my introduction. I just returned from Europe this week and have been scrambling and trying to return to some sort of relative normalcy. I have been keeping up with the current discussion, however, and have attempted to keep up with what has already gone on (Al, you were not kidding about email volume - But, have no fear, I will get there!) And so the intro: I am a recent Penn grad (WH '00) now living and working just outside of Philadelphia. While at Penn, I majored in Marketing and used every single free elective that I had to take English classes, including Screen and Play Writing, and continue to write as much as possible. I am familiar with the Kelly Writer's House due to my involvement with WXPN (I worked in various capacities for both the World Cafe and the Student run sports program, and still am the sound engineer for the Gene Shay Folk Show) and wish that I were more involved during my time at Penn. Is that too much? Hope not, but I do hope to become more involved in the discussions, as my interest and knowledge of poetry in unformed but hopefully budding. Thanks Steve From: "Robert E. Jordan" To: Subject: Introduction Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 10:32:32 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 I am Robert E. Jordan, class of 1969 from the Towne School. I now live in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Philadelphia. Bobby From: Scapjak@aol.com Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 14:50:37 EDT Subject: yet another introduction To: whbook9@dept.english.upenn.edu Sender: owner-whbook9@dept.english.upenn.edu Precedence: bulk I, too, have been waiting to add my intro to the pile. My name is Nancy Segall and I live in Evanston,Illinois where I am a social worker working with mothers and their infants and young children and also teach child development in the Chicago City College system. I may have the distinction of being the only one of you not to be an alum of Penn - but my husband is (Wharton '68), and both my sons are (College '96 and '99) and I have a fourteen year old daughter coming up the line who still thinks college means Penn. I have no pretensions to the level of literacy so very impressively represented by those of you we have heard from already. My only claim in this area is that my younger son has just entered the Writers Workshop at Iowa, so, if osmosis counts .... I was also an alumverser several years ago which I enjoyed immensely, even as one who was primarily a lurker. I am looking forward to a stimulating and engaging exchange. I thank Al for inviting me to be a part of this. Hello everyone, My name is Tahneer Oksman and, as Al mentioned, I will be helping him and Heather Starr to 'steer' this discussion. I'm a very recent Penn alumn (class of 2001) and a lover of poetry and prose. During my years at Penn, I co-hosted a bi-monthly open-mic night at Writers House called 'Speakeasy: Poetry, Prose and Anything Goes." My other affiliations with Writers House included being an undergraduate TA for Al's English 88: Contemporary Poetry course. These days, I work part-time at the house as Al's assistant. You can catch me there 'live' Monday through Thursdays in the daytime. I spend the rest of my time attempting my own writing, which currently consists mainly of short stories (although I write a bit of poetry, too). I'm very excited to meet all of you and to engage in what I expect will be exciting discussions. -tahneer ----- Reply-To: lisa.norman@eudoramail.com Subject: Intro Egads. In light of the nation's crisis, I have been swallowed in despair to some extent and am now surfacing. Hi all,

I guess I'll start, since I happen to be online as Al starts things off...

I'm Randi Marshall (formerly Randi Feigenbaum, Class of 1997). I am currently a student at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, going for my master's degree in public administration. My background is in journalism (I worked for three plus years for Newsday, a daily newspaper here in NY.)  I just got married in June, and we live in Forest Hills, NY (in Queens). At Penn, I was a political science and English major - but my main love was The Daily Pennsylvanian. :)

Luckily, I and my closest loved ones are fine physically, at least, after Tuesday's attack... and I'm very much looking forward to focusing a bit on poetry and this group after several days of thinking of nothing but those events.

Randi

I'm one of the group facilitators, along with Al and Tahneer. I've been very much looking forward to this discussion, for lots of reasons -- I was the Program Manager at the Kelly Writers House from 1998 until this past July (3 years) and have just moved this summer to Arroyo Hondo, New Mexico. For those of you familiar with the area, we're about a half hour north of Taos. (I'll bet ya a Hershey bar that no one on this list is here in the village with me -- and would happily be proven wrong!) I've definitely already missed being part of a lively and engaged writing and poetry-loving community, and now with all that's going on since Tuesday I've also been missing community, period. I write poetry and essays myself, and have found volunteering, working at, and being a part of the Writers House world has enormously broadened & enriched not only what I read but what I think about & how I listen. When I first got involved 4+ years ago I helped get an experimental poetry discussion group going so I could read & discuss with others the work of writers who were coming to read at the House -- so that sort of brings me full circle to this discussion, I guess! Other details -- I graduated from Barnard College in NYC after growing up in Portland, Oregon. My partner Christy is studying to be a midwife, so that's why we're here in beautiful New Mexico. I'm working as a line cook at a great restaurant in town, and loving it, and I listen to Democracy Now every weekday at 4pm. I'm looking forward to learning more about each other, poetry, and the world, together! Best, Heather -- Heather Starr P.O. My name is Cristina T. Lopez. I graduated from Penn in 1997 majoring in English and Communications. I write poetry and non-fiction and have just completed my first creative non-fiction book entitled Finding Francis. I took a lot of film-and-literature type classes at Penn and I would love a chance to explore some poetry. I'm a native New Yorker still living here now and glad to see so many others out there who made it through. My thoughts and prayers to those who did not. -----Original Message----- To the participants in book group number 9 of the Kelly Writers House Alumni Book Group project: It's time for us to start on a month-long journey across the range of recent poetry written by women poets associated with Penn. --Al Al Filreis The Class of 1942 Professor of English Faculty Director, the Kelly Writers House University of Pennsylvania Carnegie/CASE Pennsylvania Professor of the Year << www.english.upenn.edu/~afilreis >> From: "Robin Briggs" To: Subject: Introduction Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 13:17:11 -0400 X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4133.2400 X-OriginalArrivalTime: 17 Sep 2001 17:18:08.0031 (UTC) FILETIME=[B82A42F0:01C13F9 C] Sender: owner-whbook9@dept.english.upenn.edu Precedence: bulk This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_002A_01C13F7B.0F29F5E0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Sorry, I have been lurking for a few days, waiting for the avalanche of = email to ebb a bit.
