Careworn Caregiver
Patricia Green
Many-peaked bosom
two spirits, melting
summer-born buds
Survivors --
old, gnarled, drooping arches
in silence,
in radiance,
flitting spectral paleness:
old knots, broad back --
worn girl,
old, beautiful girl
a hundred years wrecked
or saved,
Nature
with floating bright forms
dangled, swung, stumbled;
clumsy stumps, roots
passed noiselessly
from the earth,
sweet trifles
hung down
like the bill of a pelican.
