LOCAL LOGISTICS, PART TWO:

FROM TORONTO, DOWNTOWN BUFFALO, SOUTH CAMPUS, NORTH CAMPUS TO THE FESTIVAL HOTEL AREA, FROM THE HOTEL AREA TO WEDS. AND SAT. EVENTS, MAPS
FROM TORONTO TO THE FESTIVAL HOTEL AREA

Toronto is 2 hours from Buffalo by car. I haven't taken the bus before but it should be a similar length of time. If the bus delivers you to the downtown Buffalo bus station, you need to travel out of the city towards the town of Amherst. This is what you do:

FROM DOWNTOWN BUFFALO TO THE FESTIVAL HOTEL AREA

DOWNTOWN:

From the bus station walk one block to Main Street. Catch the subway in the direction of SOUTH CAMPUS (there is only one line) and take the subway to the South Campus station.

FROM SOUTH CAMPUS TO THE FESTIVAL HOTEL AREA

SOUTH CAMPUS

From there, two options:

1. Take a cab to your hotel (a bit expensive, $15 approximately (?) But worth it in many ways. Ask the cab company for an estimate). Tell the driver it is near the Marriott Hotel by UB's Amherst campus. Advantage: you will go right to your hotel and it will take 15 minutes instead of an hour or more.

2. Take public transport from the south campus to the north campus. To do this:

a) Take the campus shuttle bus from South Campus to the North Campus (every 15 minutes; you need to walk across a bit of the campus). Advantage: frequency of service. Disadvantage: sometimes packed, a short walk necessary.

b) There is also a public bus that runs about every hour. This would be better if you have much luggage but might entail more of a wait.

FROM NORTH CAMPUS TO THE FESTIVAL HOTEL AREA

By either means, get off at the Flint Loop on UB's north campus. From there call a cab (very cheap ride, but you will have to phone. No cabs hang around there. Tell them you are at Flint Loop at UB's Amherst campus) or walk (quite a long walk if you have luggage, maybe 1/3 of a mile) down Flint Road to the hotels, which are across Maple Road from the campus. If you have little luggage and the weather is ok this is not a bad walk.On the other hand, if the weather is bad or you have a good deal of luggage, it will be difficult to do this walk.

FROM THE HOTELS TO THE WEDS. OPENING

BY SHUTTLE BUS

Walk down Flint Road towards UB, crossing Maple Road. The Center for Tomorrow will be on your left. (http://writing.upenn.edu/cgi-bin/bldgloc?centert) Just past the Center for Tomorrow on the left is a parking lot with a small attendant's booth. At this location you can catch a shuttle bus. (The Center for Tomorrow to Flint Loop shuttle operates Monday through Friday, 7:45AM through 7:45PM with departures from CFT every 10-12 minutes. The trip takes less than 5 minutes.) The shuttle driver can point you in the direction of the Center for the Arts.

WALKING

You can also walk from the hotels to the Center for the Arts. Walk past the Center for Tomorrow to Flint Loop (a roundabout with three flag poles). (About 20 minutes, walking fast.) Once at Flint Loop, turn to your right and continue.

FROM FLINT LOOP

Once at Flint Loop you will want to walk to the Center for the Arts, about a 5 minute walk. The Center for the Arts is two buildings before the sports stadium on your left. It is a huge white building (opposite a small roundabout with a buffalo in its center). (http://writing.upenn.edu/cgi-bin/bldgloc?cfa) FROM THE MARRIOTT

Those staying at the Marriott might ask if they will drive you. It only takes about 5 minutes by car. Ask them to take you to the Center for the Arts. DRIVING Take Millersport north to the Coventry Road entrance. (Left onto Millersport coming from the Marriott.) Turn left at Coventry Road (the next traffic light). Go past the stop sign and drive until you reach the roundabout with the Buffalo in the center. Park in any of the campus parking lots; after 3 pm no parking permit is needed.

FROM THE HOTELS TO THE SATURDAY EVENT IN CLEMENS

You can follow these same instructions for Saturday, going to Clemens Hall. On Saturday however, THERE IS NO BUS SERVICE. It may be better to catch a ride with someone at breakfast. You can also walk, weather permitting, it is a substantial walk but not unpleasant. http://writing.upenn.edu/cgi-bin/bldgloc?clemen
