In an interview printed in this issue, poet and critic Andrew Schelling suggests that the goal of the Naropa Institute's writing program is to teach not only how to be a writer, but to be a person. Being a person in difficult times, a difficult world is the basic ground upon which this well-produced, innovatively arranged issue builds a body of work which affirms and validates the individual's experience. A deep love for humanity flows from each page: Leah Spencer's "all my thorns point inward," Quraysh Ali's "Crescent, OK," Charles Rossiter's "I watch bad TV" are only a few.--Susan Smith Nash
