Wednesday, 5/1
- 7:00 PM: A reading by memoirist/nonfiction writer Mimi Schwartz.
Mimi Schwartz teaches and writes autobiography, memoir, and creative nonfiction. Her new book, Thoughts from a Queen-Sized Bed, is a lively personal account of sharing a life--what you get and give up for that commitment. Her work has appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine, The New York Times, Creative Nonfiction, Fourth Genre, Tikkun, and Calyx, among others. Five of her essays have been Notables in Best American Essays, including three from her new book. Her other books include Writing from Many Roles; Under Age; and Writer's Craft, Teacher's Art. She is Professor of Writing at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, on the faculty of the Winter Poetry and Prose Getaway in Cape May, and is a Geraldine R. Dodge Fellow for 2001-2002.

- 6:00 PM: First book reading: poet Deirdre O'Connor and fiction writer Lisa Borders
Deirdre O'Connor grew up in Pittsburgh and currently lives on a farm in Winfield, Pennsylvania. Her book, Before the Blue Hour, received the Cleveland State Poetry Prize in 2001. Her work has appeared in many journals, including Poetry, Hayden's Ferry Review, River City, and Xconnect. She has received an individual artist's grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, an Academy of American Poets Prize, and other awards. She teaches in the Bucknell University Writing Center and in the Bucknell Seminar for Younger Poets. Deirdre's introduction was written by Teresa Leo.
Lisa Borders recently won River City Publishing's Fred Bonnie Memorial Award for Best First Novel, and her book, Cloud Cuckoo Land -- chosen by contest judge Pat Conroy -- will be published in September 2002. She has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and her short stories have appeared in Northeast Corridor, Washington Square, Black Warrior Review, Xconnect and other journals, with a new story forthcoming in the Crescent Review. She has received grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Somerville Arts Council and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and residencies at Hedgebrook and the Blue Mountain Center. She lives in Somerville, Massachusetts, where she teaches creative writing at the adult education level and works as a cytotechnologist -- screening cellular samples for abnormalities -- in a private laboratory. She was introduced by Tahneer Oksman

- 4:00 PM: Laughing Hermit Reading Series presents David Dodd Lee and Robin Hiteshew.
David Dodd Lee is the author of three books of poems: Arrow Pointing North (Four Way Books, 2002), Wilderness (March Street Press, 2000), and Downsides of Fish Culture (New Issues Press, 1997). He has published poems and essays in CutBank, Many Mountains Moving, The Quarterly, American Literary Review, Prairie Schooner, Quarterly West, and elsewhere. He has been poetry editor for Passages North and Third Coast Magazine, Western Michigan University's literary magazine, where he received the MFA in creative writing in 1993, and a BFA in painting in 1986. He has worked as a park ranger, fisheries technician, papermaker, and in Redistribution in a hospital. He has also taught English, Creative Writing, and Art History at Western Michigan University, where he is now Associate Editor of New Issues Press. He is currently working as a freelance editor and as an art, television and movie critic for the Kalamazoo Gazette.
Robin Hiteshew lives in Philadelphia and attended Temple and Case Western Reserve Universities. He studied writing with Henry Braun. His chapbook, A Germantown Sequence, was published in 1996. He has published in journals and has poetry forthcoming in One Trick Pony. He also recently published in an Irish journal, Dearcadh. In January 1998 he established the Laughing Hermit Press and the Laughing Hermit Reading and Poetry Series in Philadelphia. He also is an avid photographer.

In May 2002, Penn's Class of 1942, celebrating its 60th reunion year, visited the Kelly Writers House. As part of its 60th reunion gift, the class pledged to support the complete renovation of the garden at the Writers House, 3805 Locust Walk. Below is a draft plan for the renovation. Click on the photo to the right to see plans for the garden renovation and photographs taken during the reunion meeting to discuss the garden with Class of 1942 Professor and Faculty Dirctor of the Writers House, Al Filreis.
- 4:00-5:15 PM: Gallery opening and reception featuring the work of Gerard DiFalco, Marianne Phillips, and Joseph Fraser III.
Gerard DiFalco, Jackson Pollock/Lee Krasner Fellow: "The Pain Quartet," a series of four new acrylic and animal bone mixed-media pieces making their debut. Marianne Phillips: "Remnants," abstracted architectural remnants with the imagery dissolved to varying degrees. Joseph T. Fraser III: “Constructions,” five wall/table sculptures that engage the eye's relationship to 3D geometrical shapes.
- 5:30 PM: SENIOR CAPSTONE PROGRAM: Marc Brunswick, Susie Cook, Allie D'Augustine, Sharon Male, Liz Rahaim, Michael Schwartz, Gina Simoncini, and Rachel Suntheimer.
Help the Kelly Writers House community celebrate these eight very talented seniors at 5:30 PM on May 11, 2002, at 3805 Locust Walk. A reception will be followed by a short program. Each year we ask a small group of graduating seniors who have been closely affiliated with the Writers House community to let us honor them in a program we call "the senior capstone." This year again Writers House-affiliated seniors will present their work, read briefly from their writing, or informally express thanks to friends and family and Writers House people for support and will informally sum up their time at Penn.
