Final design for All Join Hands mural to be installed in summer 2006
All Join Hands is a project created to raise awareness about the prevalence of youth violence in Philadelphia, investigate causes of violent behavior, and talk about solutions to these problems using art as a medium for discussion. The broad goal of All Join Hands has been to bring together groups of stakeholders whose paths might never cross to sit at the same table and conduct serious discussions about complex issues, foster new relationships within the city and state, and provide a forum for cultivating new strategies in Philadelphia's efforts to curb youth violence. The culmination of the project will be a large scale mural to be installed in Spring 2006 on the exterior wall of Benjamin Franklin High School at Broad and Spring Garden.
The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program started in 1984 as a component of the Anti-Graffiti Network. Mural artist Jane Golden was hired to reach out to graffiti writers and to redirect their energies to mural-making. Mural painting not only helped these young men and women develop their artistic skills, but also empowered them to beautify their neighborhoods. The Mural Arts Program works with over 100 communities each year to create murals that reflect the culture of Philadelphia's neighborhoods.
