We Magazine Digital Archive
Ted Farrell and I started We Magazine—a xeroxed zine—in Fall of 1986; he and I edited its first
six editions as students in Charlottesville, VA. We Press became an entity after I relocated to
California (and We acquired its first Post Office Box). We expanded over time, and began
exploring alternative methods of producing poetry publications while I was living in Santa Cruz
(1988-1992). Stephen Cope and Karl Daegling were my primary collaborators during this time.
Jimo Thomas, Angela Coon, Eric Curkendall, Katie Yates, James Garrison, Richard Loranger, Belle
Gironda, Amy Hufnagel, and others made significant editorial contributions over the years.
During the Santa Cruz period, which is the focus of PennSound's We Magazine Digital Archive,
We produced three audio magazines (one compact disc, two cassettes), a VHS edition, as well
as cassettes of poetry by William Everson, Andy Clausen (with thelemonade), and a cassette
that was included in a mixed-media envelope edition of the magazine. Later, two Internet
editions of the magazine emerged, as did our most ambitious publication, Kamau Brathwaite’s
book ConVERSations with Nathaniel Mackey (see wepress.org
for more information). Since all of our A/V artifacts are long out of print, We are grateful to PennSound for putting
them back into circulation here.
