Word Each To Cling I:
Photographed Pianola Rolls by Erica Baum
September 1 - October 25, 2008
"I want to present a voice that reminds us of the individual in the midst of the machine. So this creaky lyricism blurts along the assembly line. And the use of many pronouns keeps it abstract -- it's many voices at the same time that it's one voice..." -Erica Baum
Word Each To Cling I features photographic work by Erica Baum taken from paper rolls for a player piano, or pianola. The pieces frame excerpts of song lyrics juxtaposed with abstract musical data. The opening program included presentations on the history of automated instruments and musical notation-cum-graphic design in the 20th century by Emily Dolan & Thomas Patteson, as well as a live demonstration of a functioning player piano.
